10 Places You Can’t Miss in San Francisco

This article was updated on July 2, 2018.

No trip along the US‘ Highway 1 could possibly leave out San Francisco, the former capital of the Flower Power movement, famous for its bridge. So, we’re starting our bus trip here! The interesting thing about this city is the fact that you can get to most of its sightseeing spots using the historic streetcar, the F-Line between Castro and Fisherman’s Wharf. Here are our must-sees along that line that you should absolutely check out.

San Francisco

1. Visit Mission Dolores
Built in 1776, this is the old missionary church in Mission District and the oldest building in San Francisco to have survived the 1906 earthquake. Hop off at the corner of Market and Dolores Street and walk south on Dolores Street. The Mission is only three blocks down on 3321 16th Street.

2. Enjoy the street art around Valencia Street
There are many artworks to be discovered around the side alleys of Valencia Street in San Francisco, especially in Clarion Alley, which can be found a block south of 17th, between Mission and Valencia Street. Walk east along 16th from Mission Dolores and turn right on Valencia to find Clarion Alley one block after 17th. If you have some spare time, walk up to 23rd and pay a visit to Arizmendi. Their muffins and baked goods are worth the walk! Don’t forget your camera!

3. Go see the Painted Ladies
From the F-Line’s stop on Market & Gough Street, walk up Haight Street until Steiner Street and then turn right. Go straight until Alamo Square, and you run right into the famed houses dubbed, Painted Ladies.

4. Take a cable car from Powell Street
That’s an easy one, as the F-Line stops directly there. But don’t just hop off the street car and get onto the next one – wait a while and watch how the cable cars turn around on the platform, that’s the attractions!

5. Stroll around Chinatown
This Chinatown really makes you feel like you’re somewhere in Beijing – and it’s easily reachable! Simply continue walking along Powell Street and make a slight right – you’ll walk right into it.

6. Enjoy the view from Coit Tower
The walk to the Coit Tower from Chinatown is rather short. Walk east until Montgomery Street and then turn left, all along the street. You’ll practically walk into the tower!

7. Watch the seals on Pier 39
Walk down the steps of Coit Tower towards the harbour and then along the waterside towards the north. That way, you’ll hit Pier 39. Stay for a bit and do some seal-watching!

8. Go to Alcatraz
If you walk towards the Southeast from Pier 39, you get to Pier 33, from where the ferry to Alcatraz departs. This former prison, which closed in 1963, is must-see tourist attraction.

9. And the Golden Gate Bridge, of course!
Of course, we can’t leave out the Golden Gate Bridge! There are various buses bound there. Here is the current bus schedule.

10. Stroll down Lands End
Believe it or not, there are beaches in San Francisco! Lands End is one of them and part of the Golden Gate Recreational Area, not far from the Golden Gate. Take a hike along the wind-swept coast and enjoy the sensation of being on a beach in San Francisco. Also, the sunset there is stunning.
