Travel Restrictions: Can I vacation during COVID-19?

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we travel. As the world comes to terms with what can only be described as a “new normal”, there are more travel restrictions worldwide now than ever before. Here at Busbud, we understand that travel has to continue,  that’s why we’re here to help you through the process.

While this guide shows you which countries are reopening for tourism, we always recommend that you stay up to date with the latest travel restrictions and advice before travelling. Please verify with your national governmental travel advisory for any changes.

Europe

Austria

  • Who can visit? You can enter Austria if you reside in a country where the COVID-19 situation is stable.
  • No restrictions for visitors living in; Belgium (except the areas of Brussels and Wallonia), Bulgaria (except the regions Blagoevgrad, Burgas, Dobrich, Gabrovo, Jambol, Kardzhali, Montana, Plovdiv, Rasgrad, Shumen, Sliven, Smoljan, Sofia, Stara Zagora, Targovishte, Varna), Cyprus, Croatia (the regions Brod-Posavina, Istria, Koprivnica-Križevci, Osijek-Baranja, Šibenik-Knin, Varaždin, and Zadar only), Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France (except Île-de-France (Paris), Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur), Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal (except Lisbon and Norte), San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, the Canary Islands in Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom (except North East, East Midlands, Yorkshire and the Humber), Vatican City.
  • You must have been in one of these countries for a minimum of 10 days before travelling to Austria.
  • Restrictions apply* if you are coming from a country where the COVID-19 situation is not stable.
  • *If you have been in another country within the last 10 days, you can enter Austria if you have a medical certificate to certify you took a PCR COVID-19 test. This test must have been done within 72 hours of arriving in Austria. Alternatively, you must quarantine for 10 days upon arrival, at your own expense, in addition to providing confirmation of where you’ll be staying.
  • Do I need to undergo a COVID-19 test before arriving? Yes, you must show an immigration officer a medical certificate confirming a negative molecular-biological SARS-CoV-2 test. It cannot be older than 72 hours when you enter Austria and it must be in German or English. If you do not arrive with a test result, you will have to undergo a COVID-19 test at your own expense within 48 hours of arriving in Austria.
  • Who is exempt from providing proof of a negative COVID-19 test? Children under the age of 10 do not have to take a COVID-19 test. You do not need to take a test if you are coming from the countries mentioned in the “No restrictions” section.
  • Do I need to undergo a mandatory quarantine when I arrive in Austria? Yes, only if you are coming from a country that is not mentioned in “No restrictions” section. If this applies to you, you have to quarantine for 10 days when you arrive, at your own expense.

Belgium

  • Who can visit?
  • EU nationals from Schengen area, in addition to Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and the UK can generally enter Belgium for tourism.
  • Restrictions apply for certain countries in the EU, and certain regions within countries. Please check the Belgian foreign affairs website for a daily update to see if there are any changes.
  • Foreign nationals from outside the EU cannot travel to Belgium.
  • Are there additional entry requirements? If you are returning to Belgium or are spending more than 48 hours there, you must fill out a Passenger Locator Form.
  • Do I need to undergo a COVID-19 test before arriving? You do not need to undergo a COVID-19 test if you’re travelling from most European countries. Quarantine and tests are mandatory or recommended if you’re coming from certain countries or regions. Check here for daily updates.https://diplomatie.belgium.be/en

France

  • Who can visit?
  • No restrictions for travellers from EU countries, in addition to Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and Liechtenstein, as well as Andorra, Monaco, Vatican City State and the Republic of San Marino. People from the following countries can also enter without restrictions: Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Rwanda, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand.
  • Are there additional entry requirements? No
  • Do I need to undergo a COVID-19 test before arriving? It is not necessary to have proof of a COVID-19 test before arriving in metropolitan France. However, if you are travelling from certain countries, it is mandatory to present proof of a negative COVID-19 test before arrival in France. This must be carried out within 72 hours before your flight.
    • If you arrive in France by plane from one of the following countries, you must present a negative COVID-19 result when boarding your flight; Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, Panama, Algeria, China, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ecuador, Iraq, Iran, Israel, Lebanon, Morocco, South Africa, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine and Zimbabwe.
    • Do I need to undergo a mandatory quarantine when I arrive in France? You may be asked to quarantine upon arrival if you show symptoms of COVID-19 when you arrive. You may also be asked to quarantine when you arrive in France if you cannot produce a negative COVID-19 test result, carried out no later than 72 hours prior to your flight.
    • Important information if you are travelling to French Overseas Territories: mandatory strict 14-day quarantine, in addition to a mandatory COVID-19 test on the 7th day of quarantine if your COVID-19 test was negative 48-72 hours after your flight.

Germany

  • Who can visit?
  • You can enter Germany with no restrictions if you are not coming from an international risk area. Click here for an updated list of risk areas.
  • Restrictions apply if you are coming from a high-risk area; Belgium: Province of Antwerp (since 5/8/20) Bulgaria: Districts (“oblasts”) of Blagoevgrad, Dobritch, Varna(since 7/8/20), Luxembourg (since 14/7/20), Romania: Districts of Argeș, Bihor, Buzău, Neamt, Ialomita, Mehedinti, Timis (since 7/8/20), Spain:Autonomous communities of Aragón, Catalonia, Navarre (since 31/7/20).
  • Are there additional entry requirements? Not at the minute
  • Do I need to undergo a COVID-19 test before arriving? No, it is not a requirement to undergo a test before arrival.
  • Do I need to undergo a mandatory quarantine when I arrive in Germany? You only have to quarantine if you have travelled to one of the “risk” countries within the last 14 days before you enter Germany. You don’t have to quarantine if you can provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test. The test must be carried out by a member state of the EU, or the Robert Koch Institute. The test must have been carried out no later than 48 hours before arrival in Germany.

The Netherlands

  • Who can visit?
  • No restrictions if you live in a Schengen or EU associated country. In addition, people who reside in the following countries can enter the Netherlands; Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Rwanda, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Uruguay, China (once they allow European travellers to enter China).
  • Are there additional entry requirements? Everybody aged 13 and above arriving in the Netherlands by plane, must fill out a Health Screening Form. You will be denied boarding the plane if you report symptoms of COVID-19. Upon arrival at Dutch airports, passengers will be randomly selected to present their form
  • Do I need to undergo a mandatory quarantine when I arrive in the Netherlands? You should self-quartantine in the Netherlands if you are coning from one of the following countries mentioned here.
  • Do I need to undergo a COVID-19 test before arriving? No, there is currently no requirement to undergo a COVID-19 test before arriving.

Italy

  • Who can visit?
  • Use the Italian Government’s online tool to find out if you can enter Italy.
  • Restrictions apply if you are travelling from Romania and Bulgaria. Entry to Italy is prohibited if you are coming from these two countries, in addition to any other country not mentioned above.
  • Are there additional entry requirements? All travellers must fill out, print and carry the Self-declaration form before arriving in Italy. You should also expect to undergo a temperature check when you arrive.
  • Do I need to undergo a COVID-19 test before arriving?If you have been in one of the following countries within 14 days before arriving in Italy, you must produce a negative COVID-19 test result; Belgium, France, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Czech Republic and Spain. The test must be carried out no later than 72 hours before you arrive.
  • Do I need to undergo a mandatory quarantine when I arrive in Italy? If you’re coming from the following countries you don’t have to quarantine when you arrive in Italy; the European Union, States Parties to the Schengen Agreement, the United Kingdom, Andorra, Monaco, the Vatican City State and the Republic of San Marino.
    If you are arriving in Italy from any other country not mentioned above you must isolate for 14 days. You must also prove that your travel is urgent for work, or health reasons.

Poland

  • Who can visit?
  • No restrictions for travellers from the EU, including Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, the Vatican City State and the Republic of San Marino. People coming from flights originating in the following countries can also enter Poland; Georgia, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, Thailand, South Korea, Tunisia and Australia.
  • Restrictions apply to countries outside the EU Schengen area.
  • Are there additional entry requirements?Passengers must fill out a Passenger Locator Form and a Public Health Self Declaration. These will be distributed on flights before you land in Poland.
  • Do I need to undergo a COVID-19 test before arriving? No, it is not a requirement, you may enter Poland without a COVID-19 test.
  • Do I need to undergo a mandatory quarantine when I arrive in Poland? You only have to quarantine for 14 days if you are entering Poland from borders outside the EU.

Portugal

  • Who can visit?
  • No restrictions for travellers from the EU member states and Schengen Associated Countries. Visitors from the following countries can also enter with no restrictions; Australia, China, South Korea, Japan, New Zealand, Rwanda, Thailand, and Uruguay.
  • You can enter Portugal for essential travel only if you are from any other country. Essential travel means:
    Citizens of EU countries, or Schengen Associated Countries
    Citizens repatriated through consular assistance
    Third-country nationals travelling for professional purposes, study, family reunions, health and humanitarian reasons and under the reciprocity principle.
  • Are there additional entry requirements? If you’re travelling to Madeira, you have to present a negative COVID-19 test before boarding. This test must be done within 72 hours of your flight. You can also take the test when you arrive. You must also fill in the Survey for risk assessment and early detection if you’re travelling to the Azores.
  • Do I need to undergo a COVID-19 test before arriving? You only need to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test if you’re travelling to Madeira or the Azores. If you are travelling for essential travel you will have to undergo a COVID test at the airport and will have to pay for it.
  • Do I need to undergo a mandatory quarantine when I arrive in Portugal? No, you only need to quarantine yourself if you are travelling to the Azores and do not perform a COVID-19 test prior to departure. In this case, you will have to perform a test when you arrive and stay in quarantine until you receive the result.

Spain

  • Who can visit?
  • No restrictions for visitors from all EU member states and Schengen Associated States.
  • No restrictions: Spain also allows you to enter if you’re from one of the following countries: Australia, China, South Korea, Japan, New Zealand, Rwanda, Singapore, Thailand, and Uruguay.
  • Are there additional entry requirements? Before arriving in Spain, all passengers must fill out the Public Health Form and present the QR code to a border agent when you arrive.
  • Temperature checks will be carried out by anybody entering Spain by air or sea, to ensure your temperature is not higher than 37.5 degrees celsius.
  • Do I need to undergo a COVID-19 test before arriving? No, it is not a requirement.
  • Do I need to undergo a mandatory quarantine when I arrive in Spain? No, Spain does not require that you quarantine.

Sweden

  • Who can visit?
  • You can enter Switzerland if you are from an EU Member State or Schengen Associated Country.
    If you’re from another country, you will only be allowed entry if you are travelling for urgent needs. Read here for more.
  • Restrictions apply to foreign nationals from outside the Schengen area, or the other countries mentioned above.
  • Are there additional entry requirements? Some airlines may require that passengers show a health statement, however it is not a requirement to enter Sweden.
  • Do I need to undergo a COVID-19 test before arriving? No, it is not a requirement to enter Sweden. In Sweden, anybody is entitled to get tested for COVID-19 if they have symptoms. You can call 1177 for more information.
  • Do I need to undergo a mandatory quarantine when I arrive in Sweden? No, there is no quarantine requirements in Sweden.

Switzerland

  • Who can visit?
  • Travellers coming from EU/EEA (European Economic Area), including the United Kingdom, are permitted to enter Switzerland. Visitors coming from the following countries can also travel to Switzerland: Australia, Canada, Georgia, Japan, Morocco, New Zealand, Rwanda, South Korea, Thailand, Tunisia, and Uruguay, and the EU states outside the Schengen area (Bulgaria, Ireland, Croatia, Romania, and Cyprus).
  • Restrictions apply if you are coming from a country defined as a COVID risk, you will have to quarantine for 10 days. Look at the regularly updated list here.
  • Are there additional entry requirements? There are no additional entry requirements at this moment in time.
  • Do I need to undergo a COVID-19 test before arriving? No, it is not a requirement to enter Switzerland.
  • Do I need to undergo a mandatory quarantine when I arrive in Switzerland? In certain circumstances. If you have visited a country considered high-risk, within the past 14 days before entering Switzerland, you are required to quarantine for 10 days. You have to travel directly to your home or suitable accommodation for quarantine and remain there for the duration of your quarantine. Travellers will be notified either during their flight, on a bus or at a borer crossing of the requirement to quarantine. Once you arrive in Switzerland you will have to register with the Cantonal authorities within 2 days and follow their instructions.

United Kingdom

  • Who can visit?
  • Travellers are free to enter the UK, however depending on where you are travelling from, you may have to isolate/quarantine.
  • Are there additional entry requirements? All passengers must fill out the Passenger Locator form online. You must submit this form online only, and you can only submit it 48 hours prior to arrival in the UK. You do not have to fill out the form if you are coming from Ireland, the Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man, and you have spent at least 14 days in one of these locations.
  • Do I need to undergo a COVID-19 test before arriving? No, it is not a travel requirement to present a COVID-19 test result to enter the UK.
  • Do I need to undergo a mandatory quarantine when I arrive in the UK? You need to quarantine for 14 days if you are not travelling from one of the countries on the travel corridor list. If your country is not mentioned on the list, you will have to quarantine for 14 days when you arrive. Please note, this list is updated very regularly and countries can be added regularly. Consult the current list issued by the UK Government here.

Turkey

  • Who can visit?
  • Turkey has resumed tourism, and you can enter as usual within the normal visa restrictions of your home country.
  • Are there additional entry requirements? You will have to fill out a passenger locator form when you arrive. All passengers will be subject to medical screening when they arrive. If you present COVID-19 symptoms, you will be tested for COVID-19. If you are aged 65 or over, you must observe the daily nationwide curfew between 8pm and 10am
  • Do I need to undergo a COVID-19 test before arriving? No, it is not a travel requirement.
  • Do I need to undergo a mandatory quarantine when I arrive in Turkey? If you test positive for COVID-19, you will be taken to a Turkish hospital for quarantine or treatment.

North America

Canada

  • Who can visit?
  • Only permanent residents, citizens of Canada and foreign nationals who want to visit immediate family members living in Canada, can visit at the moment. There are a few other situations where you may be able to enter, such as temporary foreign workers and international students, however you should look at the Government of Canada website for updates.
  • Are there additional entry requirements? Before you check in for your flight or cross the border, you must use the ArriveCAN app to submit your travel and contact information, a quarantine plan, and a COVID-19 symptom self-assessment. You must show your ArriveCAN receipt to the border services when you arrive.
  • Do I need to undergo a COVID-19 test before arriving? No, it is not a requirement to enter Canada.
  • Do I need to undergo a mandatory quarantine when I arrive in Canada? Canada enforces a mandatory 2-week quarantine that requires you to have a quarantine plan that explains how you’ll quarantine for 14 days when you arrive.

Mexico

  • Who can visit?
  • You can enter as usual, as per the entry requirements of your country. Please note, the land border between the USA and Mexico remains closed to tourism
  • Are there additional entry requirements? No, there are no additional requirements.
  • Do I need to undergo a COVID-19 test before arriving? No, it’s not a requirement.
  • Do I need to undergo a mandatory quarantine when I arrive in Mexico? No, it’s not a requirement.

USA

  • Who can visit?
  • You cannot travel to the USA if you have been to one of the following destinations within 14 days prior to travelling; China, Iran, European Schengen area, United Kingdom, Ireland, and Brazil.
  • Are there additional entry requirements? The land border is currently closed between Canada and the USA, however flights are available
  • Do I need to undergo a COVID-19 test before arriving? This is not a requirement for passengers that are eligible to travel to the USA.
  • Do I need to undergo a mandatory quarantine when I arrive in the USA? Canadians do not need to quarantine when they travel to the USA. However, if you are eligible to travel to the USA, you may be required to self-isolate for 14 days.

South America

Argentina

  • Who can visit?
  • Only residents or citizens of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay can enter for tourism.
  • Are there additional entry requirements?Foreign nationals from the countries mentioned above must stay within the metropolitan area of Buenos Aires. You must also complete the “Declaración de Salud del Viajero” between 48 hours and 1 hour before the flight. You must show either a printed copy or a digital version when you arrive. Passengers aged 70+ can fill this form upon arrival in Argentina.
    You must also provide proof of medical insurance, stating that you are covered in the case of hospitalization.
  • Do I need to undergo a COVID-19 test before arriving? Yes, if you’re allowed to enter Argentina, you are asked to present a negative COVID-19 result.
  • Do I need to undergo a mandatory quarantine when I arrive in Argentina? If you are allowed to enter Argentina, you will have to quarantine for 14 days.

Brazil

  • Who can visit?
  • Brazil has not implemented a travel ban. You can travel to Brazil subject to the regular visa restrictions of your country. Foreign nationals can enter Brazil by air, except at airports in these states; Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraíba, Rondônia, Rio Grande do Sul and Tocantins. Land and air borders remain closed to foreign nationals.
  • Are there additional entry requirements? You must provide proof of travel insurance when you arrive in Brazil.
  • Do I need to undergo a COVID-19 test before arriving? No, it’s not a requirement.
  • Do I need to undergo a mandatory quarantine when I arrive in Brazil? No, it is not a requirement.

Chile

  • Who can visit?
  • As of the 23rd of November, Chile has reopened its borders to tourism.
  • Are there additional entry requirements? All passengers must fill out the Heath Affidavit 48 hours before departure. You must also provide proof of travel insurance including treatment coverage for COVID-19. You must be covered for at least US$30,000.
  • Do I need to undergo a COVID-19 test before arriving? Yes, you must present a negative test result. The test must have been carried out no more than 72 hours before the flight. You must attach the certificate to the Health Affidavit.
  • Do I need to undergo a mandatory quarantine when I arrive in Chile? No, however you must complete a 14-day Tracking period. During this time you have to submit your location daily, in addition to your health updates.

Colombia

  • Who can visit?
  • Colombia has reopened its borders to tourism.
  • Are there additional entry requirements? You must download the CoronApp and fill it out before your flight, in addition to 4 days after you arrive.
  • Do I need to undergo a COVID-19 test before arriving? No, it’s not a requirement.
  • Do I need to undergo a mandatory quarantine when I arrive in Colombia? No. However, you will be subject to a 14-day tracking period.

Peru

  • Who can visit?
  • Only permanent residents and nationals of Peru can enter the country at this time.
  • International borders are closed to foreign nationals.
  • Are there additional entry requirements? All arriving passengers must fill out this health form. Passengers over the age of 65 must also fill out an additional health form.
  • Do I need to undergo a COVID-19 test before arriving? No, it’s not a requirement.
  • Do I need to undergo a mandatory quarantine when I arrive in Peru? No, it’s not a requirement.

South Africa

  • Who can travel?
  • South Africa has reopened its borders to tourism as of the 11th of November.
  • Are there additional entry requirements? Passengers will be screened when arriving at South African airports.
  • Do I need to undergo a COVID-19 test before arriving? No, it’s not a requirement.
  • Do I need to undergo a mandatory quarantine when I arrive in South Africa? Everybody who arrives in South Africa will have to quarantine for 14 days.

Oceania

Australia

  • Who can travel?
  • Only Australian citizens, residents, or immediate family members of Australians are able to travel to Australia.
  • You can also travel to Australia if you have spent the previous 14 days in New Zealand.
  • The country remains closed for tourism.
  • Are there additional entry requirements? Arriving passengers may be screened at the airport.
  • Do I need to undergo a COVID-19 test before arriving? No, it’s not a requirement.
  • Do I need to undergo a mandatory quarantine when I arrive in Australia? Yes, all arrivals by air or sea must go into government approved quarantine for 14 days.

New Zealand

  • Who can travel?
  • Only New Zealand citizens and residents can enter the country. There are a few other exceptions here.
  • The country remains closed to tourism.
  • Are there additional entry requirements? All passengers will be screened when they arrive in New Zealand
  • Do I need to undergo a COVID-19 test before arriving? If you have COVID-19 symptoms or are awaiting a test result, you will have to quarantine.
  • Do I need to undergo a mandatory quarantine when I arrive in New Zealand? Yes, all arrivals must quarantine in a government facility. Click here for more details.
