Worldwide Bus Travel Tips

Are USA Buses Wheelchair-Accessible?

In short: Yes! According to US law, bus carriers must provide accessible transportation to the disabled – including lifts for wheelchairs. At Busbud, we’re in a unique position to help make bus travel between cities more accessible. And with the support of our bus partners, we can make it easier for people traveling with wheelchairs to find buses that can comfortably accommodate them as passengers.

We’ve now added a wheelchair booking feature on our website to help make your travel simpler and faster!

You’ll find the option to mark passengers as traveling in a wheelchair in the passenger selection panel, which is shown below. You can find out more about this feature here.

Restrictions for wheelchairs
Because of luggage compartment restrictions, wheelchairs shouldn’t exceed 33x33x40 in dimension or 200 lbs in weight. Some wheelchair lifts can accommodate a wheelchair of 30×48 max and 600 lbs (wheelchair + passenger combined).

Traveling with oxygen
All of the bus companies offer transport to passengers relying on oxygen. Much like for travelers with wheelchairs, informing bus providers in advance (48 hours) is a big plus, as this helps them be prepared! Greyhound and Peter Pan Bus can accommodate four canisters of oxygen with the dimensions of 4.5×26. Two of them can be stored on the bus, while the other ones must be transported in the underneath compartment – in protective cases and with safety caps on the valves.

Service animals
Service animals are allowed on all buses. They must travel with you all the time, be under control, and cannot occupy a seat or be in the aisle.

Traveling independently
Bus drivers, customer service personnel and contractors are available to meet the needs of passengers with special needs. They provide assistance with boarding and de-boarding buses, luggage, transfers, stowage and retrieval of mobility devices. This service is provided during transfers, meal and rest stops and other times as reasonably requested. They can also help whether you are traveling alone, using various mobility devices, or being accompanied by a service animal.
